Job Description

The Lead Backend Developer will be part of the fully remote Backend development team - building services to support a variety of products used by customers in the sports industry across the UK and internationally. This role will take on the technical leadership of one of our cross-functional product teams, architecting scalable and maintainable backend systems and ensuring best practices for coding, testing, and deployment. This is a hands-on role.

Key Responsibilities

Architecting and developing software in Golang

Ensuring security, performance, and reliability of backend services

Ensuring adherence to software development best practices

Developing microservices and deploying on Kubernetes

Connecting microservices with Event Bus (RabbitMQ) and gRPC technologies

Deploying and maintaining CI/CD pipelines for your projects (we use Bitbucket pipelines)

Developing at scale - our newest service has over 3.5 million active users monthly with large peaks during match weekends

Building content, marketing and communication tools for sports clubs to communicate with fans

Building live services with websockets at scale

Leading and mentoring backend developers

Key Candidate Requirements

Knowledge

Strong knowledge of Go

Good knowledge of SQL and both relational (PostgreSQL etc) and NoSQL databases (MongoDB etc)

Knowledge of Java for legacy services

Experience in containerisation with Docker / Kubernetes

RabbitMQ and/or Kafka

gRPC

Familiarity with AWS

Skills

High level of written and spoken English

Confident and articulate when engaging with customers and other non-technical stakeholders

Evaluating and selecting appropriate technologies, frameworks, and tools.

Ability to deal with competing demands in a fast-paced environment

A self-sufficient individual who is happy taking the lead on a project

Able to work well with others, collaborating and contributing to the overall collective to find great solutions

Positive, committed with a can-do attitude and a flexible approach

Experience

At least 5 years of experience in the industry

Computer Science Degree or equivalent to a high standard

Experience mentoring and leading more junior team members
